Bronze Fennel Plants in the Butterfly Garden
This is a beautiful short lived herbaceous perennial herb that readily reseeds. It has lovely bronze or smokey tinted feathery leaves and is a favorite of the Black Swallowtail caterpillars. It makes a striking accent plant.
The soft leaves have umbels of yellow flowers above them from mid to late summer. The flowers contain nectar and are attractive to other butterflies and pollinators. Bronze fennel can be used interchangeably with green fennel as culinary herbs – if the swallowtail caterpillars leave any.
Germination of Bronze Fennel Seeds
Bronze fennel seeds are easy to germinate with a high rate of germination. Plant outside after the last frost date in the spring or start indoors several weeks early. Plant the seeds about 1/4 of an inch deep at room temperature. They will start germinating in 7-14 days. Space about 12-18″ apart.
Why Try Smokey Fennel?
These make for beautiful host plants in the butterfly garden that are tall and unusual in color – a lovely accent plant in the back of the garden. The Black Swallowtails love them and many other pollinators do too!
