How we use the book
We use this book often! Of course we all can easily recognize the major butterflies like the Monarch and Tiger Swallowtail. Some Joyful Butterfly employees are good at identifying the butterflies with a quick look, but some of us need a reference to help. The Kaufman Field Guide to Butterflies of North America is helpful when we want to identify a butterfly that is very similar to another or if it is new to us. We also like to learn about butterflies from other parts of the country that we don’t have a chance to see in person.

The guide was useful when a hairstreak landed on our aquatic milkweed. To narrow down which one, we took a photo and then checked the field guide. Comparing the spots and lines, the guide said it was a Juniper Hairstreak. Based on the information listed, we are in its range and we do have the larval host food on property. This is such a great tool for those who want to learn more about butterflies!
